A Journey of Growth: How Jordan Found Motivation and Hope
When Charity first learned that her son Jordan had been awarded an Arete scholarship, she knew it would open doors that otherwise would have remained closed.
This year marks a special milestone for Jordan: his very first year as an Arete Scholar and his first year walking the halls of Vandebilt Catholic High School. For both Jordan and Charity, the journey has been filled with excitement, growth, and gratitude.
The transition came after several years at a local charter school that had prepared him well but left Charity wanting something more—something that would stretch Jordan academically and better prepare him for college. Charity explains their decision to make the change. “We were just looking for something that would continue to help him get ready for college. I had heard a lot of good things about Vandebilt, so we took a tour. It was actually kind of last-minute, because I was almost going to move out of state with family. But when we took the tour and met some of the staff members and coaches, we both just fell in love with it.”
That decision has already proven to be the right one. Vandebilt has given Jordan an environment where he is not only thriving academically but also growing as a young man. Jordan jumped right into Vandebilt life with enthusiasm. He earned a spot on the boys' varsity basketball team and has already begun making friends, not just on the court but in the classroom and through a Christian life group many students attend outside of school. Charity loves seeing him build new relationships. “We thought the biggest challenge would be him moving to such a big school, but he hasn’t had any problems at all,” she says. “He’s met people, gotten involved, and really feels supported.”
Academics have been a bright spot for Jordan as well. Teachers quickly recognized his strengths, especially in math. His algebra teacher has praised his advanced skills, and Charity encouraged him to explore clubs like the National Honor Society and math club. He has also enjoyed his financial literacy class, often coming home excited to share what he has learned. “His teacher has been guiding him and teaching him things he’ll need for the future,” Charity explains. “It’s been so helpful and inspiring to him.”
Charity beams when she talks about his progress. “Even when I went to open house, his teachers had great things to say about him. They said how hard he works in the classroom and outside of the classroom.”
The balance of sports and academics has been supported every step of the way by the school community. Progress reports, academic requirements for athletes, and structured mentoring create an environment where Jordan feels challenged to reach higher. “They motivate him not just to do the basics but to strive for excellence,” Charity says. “That’s the difference I’ve noticed since he started at Vandebilt.”

Jordan has big dreams for the future. He hopes to continue with basketball, attend a Division I college, and one day start his own business. Charity is grateful that Vandebilt, with the support of the Arete scholarship, is giving him the tools to think seriously about those goals.
Behind all of this growth is the support of the Arete scholarship, which made Vandebilt possible. “I would not have been able to send him there without it,” Charity says without hesitation. “The scholarship adds another layer of support that is going to help him succeed in the future. Without it, he simply would not be at Vandebilt.”
Charity is deeply grateful to the donors who make scholarships like Jordan’s possible. “I would like to thank them for awarding Jordan the scholarship, because without them, he would not be at Vandebilt Catholic,” she says with emotion. “He is surrounded by teachers and mentors who encourage him daily, and the scholarship adds another layer of support that’s going to help him succeed in the future. It inspires him, too, because he talks about things I never heard him talk about before. We’re just very grateful—it’s truly a blessing.”
Jordan’s first year at Vandebilt is only just beginning, but with a strong foundation of faith, family, and support, he is thriving. With his passion for learning, his love for basketball, and his determination to keep striving, Jordan is making the most of his time at a new school. His story is a glimpse of the kind of growth that becomes possible when opportunity and determination meet.
